How to Set Goals for Weight Loss

Making that quality decision is the first step.

The first steps to success in life will require making a quality decision no matter what your dreams or aspirations. You will most likely never succeed in achieving a goal unless make that quality decision to make a change. Once you make that quality decision, it will always require commitment, as life is made up by choices we make on a daily basis.

So how and where do you begin in making that quality decision one of the most powerful ways is through goal setting,

Goal setting as mentioned above is very powerful and has been proven over the years to not only work but is a common practice used by the top 2-3 % of the wealthiest people in the world who have not only set goals but have spent time writing them down and go over them on a daily basis, there are many ways to set and achieve your goals one way or method is called smart goals.

SMART stands for,

  • Specific.
  • Measurable.
  • Attainable.
  • Relevant.
  • Time Bound.

Set Specific Goals

Firstly your goals must be clear and well-defined. Vague or generalized goals are unhelpful because they don’t provide clear direction. Make it as easy as you can to get to where you want to go by defining precisely where you want to end up.

Set Measurable Goals

Include both short and long term goals so you can measure your degree of success. For example, if your goal is to reduce fat loss, know exactly how much body fat or belly fat would you like to lose. Otherwise, how will you know when you have been successful? The goal needs to be specific like I want to reduce my waist line from 82 cm to 79 cm equaling  1.5 percent reduction of body fat. Without a way to measure your success, you miss out on celebrating the acheivement.

Resist the urge to set goals that are way too easy. You will need to challenge yourself when measuring your goals. This only happens when you take the time to think through your goals. By setting realistic yet challenging goals, you can hit the target and get the ball rolling.

These are the types of goals that require you to then “raise the bar” and will bring about the greatest personal satisfaction once you see the results of having achieved them.

Set Attainable Goals

Is your goal attainable? That means investigating whether the goal is really acceptable or achievable to you. If you don’t have the time, money, or ability to reach a certain goal, you’ll only set yourself up to fail. Be realistic but then also as you progress and gain some momentum step out and aim for the stars.

Set Relevant Goals

Set goals that are going to be relevant to the direction you want your life to turn out or are heading in. By keeping your goals aligned this way, you’ll develop the focus you need to get ahead and do what you want. Setting vague and general scattered goals will only waste your valuable time and will not drive or motivate you and your time.

Set Time-Bound Goals

You goals must have a deadline or time limit. This means that you know when you can achieve your goal and celebrate your success. When you are working to a deadline, your sense of urgency increases and achievement will come that much quicker.

Set Goals in Writing

This is where the rubber hits the road, this is where the 2-3% of the wealthiest people in the world say that the physical act of writing down your goals makes it real and tangible.

You have no excuse for forgetting about it as it will be right in front of you staring at you spurring you on. As you write, use the word “will” instead of “would like to” or “might.”

For example, “I will reduce my waist size by 4 percent in 6 months time,” not “I would like to reduce my waist size by 4 percent this year.” The first goal statement has power and you can “see” yourself reducing your waist and fitting into your new clothes.

Share your goals with others

The next powerful thing you can do after you have made the quality decision and have set your smart goals is to tell a couple of close friends or family members that you trust and know will encourage you in achieving your goals.

As you get excited about achieving your goals others will also get involved and spur you on, if they are good friends they will want the best for you especially as you start to get results and achieve some of your short term goals on your way to long term ones.
